avalanche training - 3 steps to safe travel in avalanche terrain:

Awareness - a one-day practical course for skiers, boarders and mountaineers who want the basic knowledge and an introduction to safe travel in avalanche terrain.

Foundation - a one-evening of theory and two-day practical course for skiers, boarders and mountaineers who want to travel in avalanche terrain (see outline below). And,

Advanced - a three-day practical course with two evening planning sessions for experienced skiers, boarders and mountaineers who want to increase their understanding and ability to travel in avalanche terrain (see outline below).  Some previous touring experience (using skins or snowshoes) is recommended.

  • Each course has specific aims, programme content and outcomes to help ensure you will retain the knowledge and skills for safe travel in avalanche terrain (follow the linked titles above or go to www.avalanchetraining.info).

  • The course materials are based on the specific conditions found in the Alps and includes examples and data from the national avalanche institutes in the alpine countries. 

  • The training is mostly practical, includes survival strategies, search and rescue techniques, and easy to remember principles. 

  • A training certificate is awarded on successful completion of the course.

Foundation course outline:

Day 1 Meet at 17:00 for introduction and 2 hour theory session.

Day 2 Full day practical activities (usually rendezvous at 08:30 and finish with the close of lifts) see Foundation programme content.

Day 3 Full day practical activities (usually rendezvous at 08:30 and finish with the close of lifts with a final de-brief in a café/restaurant).

 

Advanced course outline:

Day 1 Meet at 18:30 for introduction and review of the programme.

Day 2 Full day practical activities and short ski journey (usually rendezvous at 08:30) plus 1 hour forecast and planning session (usually 17:30-18-30) see Advanced programme content.

Day 3 Full day ski journey and practical activities (usually rendezvous at 08:30) plus 1 hour forecast and planning session (usually 17:30-18-30)

Day 4 Full day ski journey and practical activities (usually rendezvous at 08:30 finish with a final de-brief in a café/restaurant).

Price - includes instruction and guiding, course materials, and use of safety equipment.

  • Awareness CHF110 (with min of 5 people)

  • Foundation CHF290 (6 to 8 in a group)

  • Advanced CHF440 (4 to 6 in a group)

Lift costs are not included and will be used according to the weather and conditions (a day ticket in Leysin is CHF49). 

 

Accommodation

Please let us know if you would like us to arrange your accommodation.  We are using two 2-star hotels in Leysin this winter:

Tour d'Ai (half board from CHF100 per person)

Villa Vermont (half board from CHF105 per person)

 

There are several bed and breakfast options including Chalet Ermina; and the Hiking Sheep is a low cost dortoir which offers half-board.  Other options are available via the Leysin Office du Tourism
